Beautiful Memories: A Hobbit-Inspired Scrapbook Layout | Debbi Tehrani

A magical Hobbiton memory takes center stage in this layered 8x8 scrapbook layout, where distressed papers, dimensional details, and gorgeous Bramble Fox Perspextives create a page full of texture and charm. I used the fabulous Beautiful Memories title and matching heart Perspextives, along with the stencil from the October Fox Box Plus. The mustard and dark gray hearts immediately gave me my color palette, and I found an old paper pad in my stash with just the right shades of gray and mustard to complement them. I love when one Bramble Fox product sparks the direction for an entire layout! Please note that I scrap in an 8 x 8 format, so Bramble Fox products may look a little larger on my layouts than they would on a 12 x 12 page. I actually love this because it lets all those gorgeous details really shine!

Let the Title Steal the Show

How fabulous is this Beautiful Memories title? I absolutely love the mustard color, and it practically glows against the beautiful Hobbiton landscape photo of my nephew and his bride. The title also combines two completely different fonts—a beautiful, fanciful cursive with a playful, chunky print—which gives it so much personality. I love how the contrast between the fonts makes the title feel both elegant and fun, which seemed perfect for this photo and the memory I was documenting.

The matching heart Perspextives were another little detail that helped pull the whole design together. I always love having coordinating hearts to tuck somewhere onto a layout! 💡 Debbi’s Design Tip: Don't be afraid to make your title a major design element. A beautiful title Perspextive can do more than tell the story—it can establish your color palette, provide contrast, and become the focal point of your entire layout.

A Little Paper Drama

My layout design was inspired by a page I saw years ago by Belinda Spencer, and I have always loved the drama created by torn paper flaps folded back to reveal another pattern underneath. I recreated that idea here, tearing my patterned papers and folding some of the pieces back so you can see the layers beneath. I love how the distressed edges soften all the straight lines and give the background a more organic feel.

Once I had my background established, I positioned my photo and matted it with distressed-edge papers. I tucked a couple of tags behind the photo and dangled some sweet charm flowers from twine before building clusters on either side. Those little bits of twine and metal add another layer of texture that you don't necessarily notice from across the room, but they make the close-up details so much more interesting.

💡 Debbi’s Design Tip: Try tearing patterned paper instead of cutting every edge perfectly straight. The uneven edges add movement and texture, and folding sections back lets you sneak another pattern into your design without adding another full layer.

Who Says Stencils Belong on the Background?

Here's a closer look at the right-hand cluster. The beautiful leaves and mushrooms are from the stencil included in the October Fox Box Plus, but instead of using the stencil on my background, I used it to create individual embellishments. I stenciled the designs onto cardstock and then cut them out to tuck into my cluster.

I especially love those little mushrooms! They immediately made me think of a little Hobbit town and seemed like the perfect embellishment for a photo taken in Hobbiton. I also used an older Bramble Fox View Master Reel die as a base for the cluster. It adds another shape underneath the layers and gives me a nice foundation for building all those little details.

💡 Debbi’s Design Tip: Don't think of stencils as something that has to stay on the background! Stencil onto cardstock, fussy cut the shapes, and suddenly you've created custom embellishments that coordinate perfectly with your page.

One More Little Something

Here's a closer look at the bottom of that right-hand cluster. The phrase strips are from one of my favorite Bramble Fox Paper Snips sheets, Vintage Sentiments 055—a must-have sheet bursting with more than 100 versatile phrases that can work on just about any project. I love having generic phrases like these in my stash because they make it so easy to add a tiny bit of personality wherever a cluster needs something extra.

One of the tips I always share is to leave your layout overnight and look at it again with fresh eyes the next day. I almost always find that little something that would make the perfect finishing touch. On this layout, that something was the addition of the mustard pearly brads. They added just the right amount of dimension and shine without competing with the title or photo.

💡 Debbi’s Design Tip: Give your layout a chance to “speak” to you before you call it finished. Stepping away overnight and coming back with fresh eyes can make it much easier to spot that one little detail that will take your page from finished to really finished.

Perfectly Imperfect

Here's a look at the cluster on the left side of the photo. I used many of the same elements as I did on the right to create balance, but I didn't want the two clusters to be exact copies. I actually hesitated about adding the butterflies because I didn't have two similar ones, but then I remembered something: nature isn't perfectly symmetrical!

There are so many different kinds of butterflies in nature, so I decided it was perfectly fine to use the one plastic translucent butterfly I had in my stash. And I'm so glad I did! It adds another translucent element and brings a little movement to the cluster.

And, of course, I added hearts. I almost always add hearts to the layouts I give away, so it was wonderful to discover that I had hearts in my stash that coordinated perfectly with my Beautiful Memories title.

💡 Debbi’s Design Tip: Don't feel like every cluster has to be an exact mirror image of another. Repeating colors and shapes creates balance, but allowing the individual clusters to be slightly different makes the page feel more natural and interesting.

There are some memories that deserve to be surrounded by a few extra layers, and this beautiful Hobbiton photo was definitely one of them. I love how the distressed patterned papers, dimensional Bramble Fox Perspextives, stenciled leaves and mushrooms, vintage-inspired phrase strips, and tiny finishing details all work together to frame the photo without taking away from it.

The Beautiful Memories title seemed like the perfect choice for this page—not only because of the memory it documents, but because that's really what scrapbooking is all about. Taking a photograph from a special moment and turning it into something you can hold onto, revisit, and enjoy for years to come.
